For Subsequent Visa - Subclass 485
Bring Your Partner or Family Members to Australia
The Subsequent Entrant visa allows eligible partners and dependent children of a current 485 visa holder to join them in Australia at any time, even if they were not included in the original application.
Supports Your PR & Settlement Journey
Having your partner with you in Australia makes it easier to plan for skilled migration, employer sponsorship, state nominations, and long-term PR pathways together.
Full Work & Study Rights for Your Family
Your partner and dependants receive full work rights once their 485 Subsequent visa is granted, helping your family settle, study, or work while you build your long-term future in Australia.
Straightforward Family Addition Option
If you meet relationship requirements and documentary standards, the process is generally simple and does not require a new skills assessment or new study.

For Temporary Graduate Subsequent Visa - Subclass 485
You must be the family member of a current Subclass 485 visa holder (Graduate Work, PHEWS, PVEWS, or Second 485 streams).
You must be the spouse or de facto partner, or dependent child of the primary 485 visa holder. De facto partners must show 12 months of evidence unless exempt.
You may be in or outside Australia when applying. Applicants inside Australia must hold a valid substantive visa or a Bridging Visa.
Provide documents such as: joint leases, bank accounts, photos, communication history, shared bills, or statutory declarations to prove a genuine and continuing relationship.

Must show adequate health insurance covering the applicant from the time of application until a decision is made.
If requested, you must provide police clearances, including the AFP check (Australia) and relevant police clearances from overseas.
Must show the primary holder can support dependants (bank statements, employment evidence) if requested by the Department.

The Knowbal Visa Application Process
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Many applicants begin their relationship after receiving the 485 visa. As long as you meet the married or de facto criteria, your partner can apply at any time. This is one of the most common reasons students lodge a Subsequent Entrant application.
You may still be eligible if you can show:
compelling circumstances,
culturally recognised commitments,
shared travel,
ongoing communication,
or relationship registrations (where applicable).
Most students book a consultation to structure evidence clearly because DHA requires proof of a genuine, continuing relationship.
If they hold another valid visa (visitor, student, etc.), they may enter Australia — but they must comply with that visa’s conditions. Entering Australia does not speed up the Subsequent Entrant application, so timing needs to be managed carefully.
Yes — but only until your 485 expires. Once the primary visa ends, the Subsequent Entrant option closes. Lodging early helps avoid issues linked to bridging visas, travel plans, or expiry complications.
If applying inside Australia, your partner will receive a Bridging Visa A allowing them to stay lawfully while the application is assessed. If applying outside Australia, they must remain offshore unless they have another visa to enter Australia.
Joint finances help but are not mandatory. You may provide other relationship proofs such as:
photos
chat logs
call records
travel itineraries
statutory declarations
shared plans (leases, bills, etc.)
The Department assesses the relationship holistically.
Indirectly, yes. Although the Subsequent Entrant itself doesn’t lead to PR, living together in Australia makes it easier to build:
de facto partnership evidence,
joint financial history,
long-term cohabitation records.
This strengthens future Partner visa or skilled migration pathways.
