FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply as a Subsequent Entrant on a Subclass 494 visa?

You can apply if you are an eligible family member of a current Subclass 494 visa holder — typically a partner (spouse/de facto) or a dependent child — and you were not included in the primary applicant’s original visa application.

Can I apply for the Subsequent Entrant visa from inside Australia?

Yes. You can apply from inside Australia (if you hold a valid visa) or from overseas, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements and can show a genuine family relationship to the primary Subclass 494 visa holder.

What visa length will a Subsequent Entrant get?

Your visa is usually linked to the primary visa holder’s Subclass 494. In most cases, it will be granted up to the same expiry date as the main applicant’s visa (not a fresh full term).

What work and study rights do Subsequent Entrants have?

Once granted, Subsequent Entrants can generally live, work, and study in Australia while the visa remains valid. Regional conditions still apply, meaning you must work and study

What relationship evidence is usually needed for a strong application?

For partners: marriage certificate (if married) and/or proof of a genuine de facto relationship (shared finances, shared address, communication history, social evidence). For children: birth certificate/adoption papers and evidence of dependency where relevant.

Is there an age limit for dependent children applying as Subsequent Entrants?

Dependent children are usually under 18, but older dependent children may still qualify if they meet dependency rules (for example, being financially dependent and not married/in a de facto relationship). Evidence is important for older dependents.

Do Subsequent Entrants need health and police checks?

Yes. Subsequent Entrant applicants must meet health and character requirements, which can include medical examinations and police checks depending on your circumstances and where you’ve lived.
