Frequently Asked Questions
It’s a temporary visa that allows you to come to Australia to participate in workplace-based occupational training to improve your skills for your job, area of tertiary study, or field of expertise, or to take part in a professional development training program.
Yes. You must be sponsored, and you usually must be nominated. If your sponsor is a Commonwealth Government agency, you may need to be invited instead of nominated.
This visa covers different types of occupational training, and the requirements can vary depending on the training purpose. The training must be structured and workplace-based, with a clear training plan and outcomes.
Yes. For skills-improvement training, the training must relate to an occupation on the eligible skilled occupations list and the training must be clearly linked to your background and training needs.
For occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation, you must have recent and suitable prior experience (including employment or study) that is the equivalent of at least 12 months full-time experience in the occupation and has occurred in the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged
This refers to structured workplace-based training that helps build skills and capacity for use outside Australia. It can include situations such as a person enrolled in a foreign educational institution who needs practical training, research, observation, or professional exposure to complete their qualifications.
High-intent students usually don’t fail on eligibility — they fail on timing and sequence. The most practical planning steps are:
- Build a timeline around your actual completion/graduation pathway (including realistic delay risks).
- Map when you can/do need to do PY/NAATI, skills assessment preparation, and employment strategy, so you don’t finish study with no runway.
- Avoid “course hopping” that creates a messy narrative unless there’s a clear, documented reason and a coherent career direction.
If you want, we can structure a PR-aligned plan based on your course, occupation target, and timeframe — and highlight the common timing traps that lead to rushed applications.
